Questions to ask your Doula!

*I update this list periodically to reflect questions that previous clients have asked me. Last updated: Jan. 2025

When interviewing a doula, its important to make sure that you talk with a few to ensure that you find the right fit for your birth and postpartum team. You want to make sure that they are a team player and get to know them personally. Here is a good starting point for your own list of questions to ask a doula.

Get to know you questions:

Why did you become a doula?

What trainings have you attended and what certifications do you hold?

Tell me about your pricing and what it includes.

What type of continuing education have you done?

Birth Doulas:

How many births have you attended?

Do you attend hospital births, home births, or birth center births?

Have you worked with my provider?

Will you meet with me after my birth so we can process the birth and I can ask you questions?

Do you have a backup doula?

When will you be on call for my birth?

Do you have any references that I can contact or any reviews that I could read?

Do you offer any other services like birth photography or placenta encapsulation?

How many clients do you have around my due date?

Have you ever missed a birth?

What is your doula style?

How do you take care of yourself during a long labor?

Do I have to pay more money if I have a long labor?

Postpartum Doulas:

Do you have any other commitments that might cause you to reschedule a postpartum shift?

What do you do in a normal day shift? Overnight shift?

How do you support sleep for myself, my baby, and my partner?

Is there anything you don't do?

What if you are sick? What if we are sick?
